My local district, here in Colorado Springs, is District 1 for the Colorado Springs City Council. The seat for this district is up for election in the April 1, 2025 election. In order to be an informed voter, I started looking up both the candidates.
I found myself very dismayed when I went to Ballotpedia and linking to their individual candidate sites that we have two retired military white men that doesn’t effectively tell me anything on how or why I should vote for them.
Given my dismay, I emailed both candidates (Lee Lehmkuhl and Dave Donaldson), shared my concerns, and asked them why would I select them as my representative when I don’t see myself, or those I care for, represented by them?
Lee Lehmkuhl was the only one to reply. Lee told me that he shared my concerns with the representation in the Colorado City council and shared his desire to find ways to better serve the people they represent.
Lee Lehmkul graduated from George Washington with a PhD in Science and taught math at the Air Force Academy. He described how throughout his military service, he honed his skills for mediating conflict and lower the temperature of competing voices. He noted that he wishes to advocate for all citizens not just those who look and think like he does. His willingness to hear and request further information tells me he is curious and willing to consider differing views.
Yesterday, I completed my ballot which arrived on Saturday (9 March 25), and will drop it off on Wednesday.
I ask that you please take the time to get to know each candidate and it is my hope that you will vote for Lee Lehmkuhl.
